The Joint Business Forum extends its very best wishes to the peace process initiated by the Government of Sri Lanka along with Norwegian facilitation, which has culminated in the signing of an agreement with the LTTE.

We view this courageous and farsighted initiative as the best chance for peace.

The Joint Business Forum firmly believes that a resolution of the conflict and lasting peace can only come about through committed and sustained negotiations in a spirit of give and take. We note with profound sorrow the loss of over 60,000 lives and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of helpless people who languish in refugee camps. Further hundreds of thousands including top professionals have fled the country due to this war. Malnourishment of innocent children, and the breakdown in law and order in the whole country are some of the other adverse impacts of this war on our people.

This senseless conflict has resulted in a tremendous loss of investment both local and foreign and we have watched with regret the flow of capital into neighbouring countries at the expense of Sri Lanka. The resulting deterioration in our economy has enmeshed a large proportion of our population in deprivation and poverty.

The Joint Business Forum offers its unwavering support at this crucial juncture to all the parties engaged in seeking a solution at the present time to this vexed problem
