Vettori has checks on injured back CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand, Wednesday, (Reuters) - New Zealand spinner Daniel Vettori is in Christchurch having his troublesome back assessed by New Zealand Cricket medics with the first test against England just a week away. New Zealand Cricket fitness advisor Warren Frost said: "We always saw Daniel's recovery as a two-year project and he was in a little bit of pain after the Australian series. "It didn't get any worse during the one-day series against England, which is a good sign, but then it didn't get any better." Vettori has injured his back on two occasions. The first was against Australia in a test in Wellington in 2000 and the latest was in Zimbabwe later in 2000. The latest breakdown kept him out of cricket for all but one-day internationals in the 2000-2001 season. He was persuaded not to play in Northern Districts' latest State Championship match against Wellington. Meanwhile, New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming scored 88 not out in Wellington's seven wicket victory over Vettori's Northern Districts on Wednesday. The knock was a good indication that he will be fit for the first test after suffering a badly bruised hip on Monday when he was hit by a ball from new one-day international bowler Ian Butler. |
