by Florence Wickramage Several income generating programs have been launched by the Ministry Assisting Vanni Rehabilitation, in the Mannar, Vavuniya and Puttalam districts to improve the living conditions of internally displaced persons. During the first 50 days of the Government's 100 day program, a special income generation project was undertaken for the benefit of the re-settled fishing community in Mannar, said M.I.S. Ahamed, Assistant Secretary of the Ministry. A sum of Rs. 400,000 has been released to five Fishermen's Cooperative Societies in Mannar to grant loans to members to enable them to purchase fishing gear and other equipment. A skills development program is also in progress. The Vanni Rehabilitation program has placed special emphasis on village habitats of the re-settled persons and schools. Infrastructure facilities including electricity and roads were provided in those areas. The last Haj festival which fell on the 23rd and 24th of last month held a special significance to about 500 people living outside the Northern Province since they were afforded the opportunity to visit their native places and relatives living in the Vanni district in the company of Minister Noordeen Mashoor. Most of the special projects undertaken by the Ministry is being funded by the Resettlement, Rehabilitation Authority of the North (RRAN), the Ministry of Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Refugees and the Ministry of Eastern Development and Muslim religious Affairs Mr. Ahamed said. |
