Rs. 100m buildings for Jaffna University Agriculture, Science Faculties

Two new buildings will be constructed at a cost of Rs.100 million for the Agriculture and Science Faculties of the Jaffna University so as to enhance its educational facilities and accommodation capacity.

Tertiary Education and Training Minister Kabir Hasheem who visited Jaffna recently to review and discuss the problems of Jaffna educational officers and university students has pledged this to the Jaffna university authorities.

At the meeting, the deans of all the faculties presented papers detailing their immediate requirements highlighting the issues needing urgent attention to the Minister. Their representations revealed a shortage of experienced senior lecturers for the Medical faculty, and non-academic staff including the need for laboratory equipment, furniture and vehicles, etc.

The Minister had promised to allocate funds to acquire a van, a pick up truck and a bus to transport medical students to the Jaffna base hospital for their hospital rounds.

He also explained to the Vice Chancellor and the senior lecturers who were present at the meeting of the Ministry's financial constraints, liquidity crisis and the reduced budget for the year 2002 for capital allocations.

The meeting was attended by the Ministry Secretary Saman Ediriweera, University Grants Commission Chairman Prof.Ranjith Mendis and Member of the Technical and Vocational Education Commission Asmi Thassim.

Minister who was accompanied by Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Jhonston Fernando also visited the Advanced Technical Institute affiliated to Sri Lanka Institute for Advanced Technical Education (SLIATE), Jaffna Technical College, Open University of Sri Lanka Regional Centre, Jaffna Municipal Public Library and the University Library.

He also met the representatives of the Unemployed Graduates Union Jaffna district branch. The trip was organised by Hindu Cultural Affairs Ministry.
