Cost effective system of cargo transport launched

Ceylon Carriers Ltd. and the Transport Corporation of India signed an agreement to launch a cost-effective system of cargo transportation in Sri Lanka.

The new Express Cargo System (ECS) is being introduced for the first time in Sri Lanka and its immediate benefit would be cheaper cargo rates, Rohan Nanayakkara, Group Chairman, Ceylon Carriers Ltd. told the media last week.

He said ECS covers India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan for items to be shipped or air freighted.

"Our network in the sub-continent links 900 major cities, and it covers a network of 160 towns in Sri Lanka. Our customers using this system will be able to send their packages to almost all major cities in the island at very nominal costs. The service is available to manufacturers, wholesalers, distributors, hoteliers, marketing and plantation companies," Mr. Nanayakkara said.

He said ECS is a novel cost saving concept in cargo service and the customers are ensured a number of benefits.

"Traditionally, we used to hire an entire vehicle even for a small item to be transported urgently. With ECS the same exercise costs much less, because the customer has only to pay for the items shared by weight of the total load. The customer has to pay at a rate per kilo ranging from the distance to be covered and it will be delivered to the customer's doorstep.

Among the other benefits are that the service is guaranteed and has an insurance cover. The delivery is made within a time schedule prepared for different areas and the customer can locate the cargo in transit," Mr. Nanayakkara said.

U. K. Bhalla, the General Manager of XPS, the Express Cargo Division of TCI, U.K. said the Corporation is Asia's largest integrated logistics provider with over 1000 branches worldwide.
