TELF welcomes Ceasefire Agreement

The leadership of Velupillai Prabhakaran in cooperation with the Government of Sri Lanka produced the permanent ceasefire that we celebrate today. This has now marked a turning point and a milestone in the struggle and sacrifices of the Eelam Tamil movement. The voluntary upswells of welcome of this accord among the Tamils at large in all their traditional areas in the country also brought out the measure of their support to Velupillai Prabhakaran and the leadership provided by him, states the General Secretary of the Tamil Eelam Liberation Front M. K. Elaventhan in a press release.

It further states: This accord should prove a case for the sought after full liberation of the Tamils from the shedding of blood. This shedding of rivers of blood these well nigh 20 years if not more has now been brought to a halt. This has brought the belief now, that the deepest past suspicions and tragedies can now be resolved by talks and no more by war. A matter of immeasurable happiness that could not be expected up to now is that, as in a sea-change, the Sinhala leaders and people at large are determined to seek a final solution through peace.

The agreement that was reached on behalf of the Tamils by Prabhakaran and on behalf of the government by Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe has drawn the attention and plaudits of the world. This has included countries that have for one reason or the other listed the LTTE as a terrorist organisation, who by their recognition of the peace accord have also created a niche in history towards peace making.

India, whose goodwill has been revered by both Sinhalese and Tamils, has praised us for this attainment. In this process the role of Norway as a facilitator has become a matter fro warmest appreciation. In this wholesome situation we are certain that President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga will give of her fullest backing to the attainment of the goals that the country has set for itself.
