by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi A doctor who was charging from patients for treatment prescribed by him while on duty at a Government hospital has been caught red handed by the flying squad officials of the Health Ministry. An official said, the doctor concerned a Registered Medical Officer attached to a rural hospital in Kandy has been charging fees from patients who were asked to purchase drugs at a sales point at his official residence near the hospital. When a patient arrives, this doctor asks whether he would like to obtain private treatment or state. If the patient prefers to obtain private treatment, he is given a note and sent to his official quarters, an official attached to the flying squad said. On a tip-off given earlier, a Flying Squad engaged a Ministry official last week to obtain private treatment from this doctor. He has also failed to maintain his diary properly. Even after he was detected, the doctor concerned had refused to give any statement to the official of the flying squad and as a result, officials had to obtain special permission from the Central Provincial Council to bring him down to Colombo to record a statement. Further investigations are conducted under the guidance of Flying Squad Director H.A. Ariyawansa. |
