by Ambalangoda Central special correspondent Within a brief time span of just two months since our government came into power the Ranil Wickremesinghe administration has entered into a landmark agreement with the LTTE to suspend the long combat until both parties find a common political solution to the conflict, said Vajira Abeywardena Minister of Public Administration, Management and Reforms. The Minister said consequently hostilities on either side have now ceased and the country is now witnessing a lull in gunfire, explosions and bloodshed. All roads and highways leading to the war-torn zones are now reopened. Ranil Wickremesinghe as Head of the government visited the Wanni for the first time since the civil war broke out nearly two decades ago. Minister Abeywardena was addressing a rally in support of the UNP group of candidates who are contesting the upcoming local UC elections. This meeting was held at Polwatte in Ambalangoda on February 24. Minister Abeywardena said parallel to the ongoing peace efforts the government will develop the country's industrial sector including tourism which are vital for the Sri Lankan economy. There was a massive swing away from the People's Alliance to the UNF during the December Parliamentary elections. I am confident the voters will express their same eloquent affirmation of their faith in the UNF government at the local govt. elections too, Minister Abeywardena said. |
