Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has agreed to a proposal by LSSP Leader Batty Weerakoon for the formation of a Parliamentary Committee to monitor the implementation of the Ceasefire Agreement and said that the proposal was timely and practical. The Prime Minister, in a communique to the LSSP Leader, has appreciated Mr. Weerakoon's helpful observations on the peace initiatives of the Government and stressed the crucial importance of all political parties in working together in the interests of a durable negotiated settlement of the ethnic crisis at a time when a fresh window of opportunity has presented itself. The Premier has suggested that such a Committee to monitor the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement should be nominated by political parties represented in Parliament and be entrusted with a mandate to assess the progress achieved on a continuous basis. The Premier has also suggested that the Leaders of political parties should be free to nominate their representatives, Members of Parliament and others. He said that the Prime Minister's office will serve as the conduit through which information will be transmitted by the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission to the Committee appointed by Parliament. The Premier has told the LSSP Leader that he will work out the modalities relating to the appointment of this committee if he is in agreement with this proposal, so that it would commence functioning as soon as possible. |
