Hindus attack mosque in western India AHMEDABAD, India, Feb 28 (AFP) - A large crowd of Hindu youths attacked a mosque in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad on Thursday, sparking a running street battle with police and Muslim residents. The incident came a day after Muslims attacked a train carrying Hindu activists in Godhra, 160 kilometers (100 miles) east of Ahmedabad, killing 58 people. Up to 100 young Hindus pelted the mosque in a Muslim-dominated residential area of Ahmedabad with stones, bricks and glass bottles. Police arrived quickly on the scene and managed to disperse the crowd, which then regrouped and renewed its assault as local Muslims came out of their houses and tried to beat the assailants back. The Hindus also managed to start small fires in two residential buildings adjoining the mosque. |
