Telephone Companies dealing in mobile and land phones have pledged Rs. 14.2 m towards housing development activities in the Beruwala Electorate undertaken by the National Housing Development Authority under its 100 days program. They made this offer at a meeting presided over by Mass Communication Minister Imthiaz Bakeer Markar at his Ministry on February 26. A press release issued by the Mass Communication Ministry said Minister Bakeer Markar thanked the phone companies for their generous offer and observed that they were performing a national service by contributing part of their profits to cater to the needs of low income families in the country. By engaging in development activities of this nature these institutions can clear the wrong impression created in the minds of the people about their activities and safeguard their future business interests. Their gesture would also be a fine example for other business enterprises in the country to engage in such humanitarian work. The Ministry release said the donation will be handed over to the Minister at the Mass Communication Ministry Mobile Service to be held at Beruwala Madya Maha Vidyalaya on March 2 to be credited to the Housing Development Fund. The donation will be utilised to complete construction and renovation of 12 low cost housing schemes in the Beruwala electorate without burdening State coffers. The Minister also hopes to solicit private sector assistance towards raising another Rs. 11.3 million needed to improve the Common amenities in these low cost housing schemes. Representatives of Sri Lanka Telecom, MTV networks, Dialog GSM, Celltel and Hutchinson Phone Company attended the Conference held at the Ministry. |
