Education system should be developed to alleviate poverty

by Nadira Gunatilleke

The education system of Sri Lanka should be developed to alleviate poverty. All the children in the country cannot be admitted to schools such as Royal College and Visakha Vidyalaya. Therefore, the Government will take measures to provide facilities to rural schools while setting up new schools in those areas with all modern facilities, Human Resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs Minister Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku said.

He was speaking at the opening of the new conference hall of Samurdhi Society at Malambe in the Kaduwela Divisional Secretariat area. The building was constructed at a cost of Rs. 1.6 million. Samurdhi recipients have contributed to set up the building by providing free labour. The Minister said that the UNF Government operates according to former Prime Minister the late D.S. Senanayake's policies based on democracy and equality.

Mr. Kodituwakku said the Samurdhi Movement is based on the concept of Janasaviya program introduced by former President Ranasinghe Premadasa. Minister S. B. Dissanayake who introduced the Samurdhi Movement is now with us and we will work to eradicate poverty.

He said in the past, the Janasaviya program was implemented with the aim of eradicating poverty in five stages but the work could not be completed. The Government will eradicate poverty in the country through the Samurdhi Movement, the Minister said.

"Kaduwela has become a highly populated area and people suffer due to the lack of housing facilities. The housing problem should be addressed as soon as possible. There are no state lands to be distributed among the landless people because some persons have already obtained a large number of state lands during the previous regime. The Government hopes to build blocks of flats in this area soon", he said.
