The formal ceasefire agreement between the Government of Sri Lanka and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam was warmly welcomed by the European Union in a statement yesterday. The release by the European Union Commission Delegation to Sri Lanka and the Maldives expressed its hopes that the agreement would lead to measures aimed at national reconciliation, and in particular to the reunion of families separated by the conflict. The EU appealed to all parties to the conflict to avail themselves of the historic opportunity, in the interests of the people of Sri Lanka, and to undertake with determination and good faith a process of constructive dialogue leading to a lasting peace in the country." |
