Police ordered to remove election posters

by Ranga Jayasuriya

Police have been ordered to remove election decorations and posters, OIC Police Election Secretariat IP S. K. Ratnaweera told the Daily News, yesterday. Every police station has been provided with two labourers to carry out the task, he said.

Removal of posters and decorations has already begun and will be stepped up in the next few days, he added.

Meanwhile the Police Election Secretariat said 89 incidents of election related violence were reported so far. 43 complaints were made by the United National Party while 26 were made by the People's Alliance. Nine complaints were made by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna and five by other parties.

IP Ratnaweera said the number of incidents of election violence this time around has significantly declined compared to the run up to the last General Election.

The OIC Police Election Secretariat also said the existing law permitted the arrest of culprits of election 'violence without' warrants.
