Travel to Jaffna: MoD clearance not required The Defence Ministry approval for the civilians travelling to Jaffna will no longer be required as Government further relaxed regulations regarding the civilians seeking travel to Jaffna by air and sea passage with immediate effect. Issuing new set of guidelines with regards to the air and sea passage to the North, Ministry of Defence (MOD) yesterday said that no approval will be required hereafter by Sri Lankan citizens travelling to Jaffna. However, their identities should be proved at the point of embarkation when they travel by air or by ship at any Security Force or Police checkpoints established by the Government, the Ministry added. All non-Sri Lankans should seek permission from the Ministry of Defence to visit the North. However, any non-Sri Lankan who has been recommended in writing by Sri Lankan Ambassadors and High Commissioner abroad after scrutiny for travel to Jaffna will be permitted access to the Jaffna without MOD approval. Any diplomatic official, stationed in Sri lanka will not require permission from MOD to travel to the North, the Ministry added. The Ministry also emphasised that any Sri Lankan, non-Sri Lankan, Diplomat or anyone visiting uncleared areas will do so at their own risk.
