Fort Traffic

Last Saturday, the City Traffic Police took the initiative to impose a whole new system of one-way traffic to channel the flow of vehicles through the Fort, Colombo.

The Traffic Police has not been averse to experimentation in their attempts to improve the movement of vehicular traffic in the City.

Some of the big junctions like Kanatte and Horton Place, where the complex of roundabouts had daily suffered nightmare traffic jams, were redesigned with elaborate traffic light systems. So far they have been successful in keeping blockages to the minimum. Kanatte junction, in particular, has been transformed and all credit must go to our City Traffic Police and their collaboration with the Municipal Council.

When the one-way scheme in the Fort was launched last Saturday, the usual light traffic of a weekend was no test. Today, Monday, being the first busy weekday, will be the true test of the traffic scheme.

If huge traffic jams begin building up again, then, the one-way system will need reviewing.

It may help to install traffic lights at some Fort junctions, as was done in the past. The other reality is that all positive efforts by the Traffic Police are eternally dogged by the carelessness and sheer poor quality of Colombo’s motorists. Very many of those who carry driving licences simply do not demonstrate a genuinely adequate standard of driving - both in terms of handling their vehicles as well as their knowledge of road rules. Something has to be done about this as well.
