Swedish dance troupe in Sri Lanka

A group of folk dancers and musicians from Sweden currently on a visit to Sri Lanka staged their first public performance at the Elphinstone theatre, Maradana, yesterday evening (February 11).

The tour has been arranged by Mrs Priyawada Banduwardene a novelist who is married to a Swedish and domiciled in Sweden for the past several years, and Mrs Sussane Wictorine who is the leader of the group, who has lived in Sri Lanka as a child.

"The idea is to deepen the long-standing cultural ties between Sweden and Sri Lanka , and to understand each other's culture better," she told the Daily News.

The troupe also hopes to visit villages in the Galle district and perform with the villagers.

What is unique about this dance cum musical troupe is that all of the dancers and musicians are above 40 years , some of them in their seventies. The eldest is Dengt Errikson who is 78 years old.

The troupe of 16 dancers and 3 musicians will leave for Sweden on February 23.

JCT records 81 moves per hour on holiday

The main line container vessels handled at JCT on Independence Day (holiday) recorded very high productivity with a peak of 81.4 moves per hour on MV "Newportbay", a vessel owned by P&O Nedlloyd, a member of the Grand Alliance.

The hourly productivity of this vessel has shown over 100 moves per hour at times reaching 117 moves.

Among others "APL Agate" achieved a vessel productivity of 68.4 moves per hour.

Contrary to usual holidays, the employees of JCT had shown their determination to take the challenge by maintaining normalcy in attendance. The Sri Lanka Ports Authority recognises this special effort made by the management and employees of the Jaya Container Terminal, the flagship terminal of the Port of Colombo, a Ports Authority spokesman said.

Leaf springs broken in ill-fated bus

The Colombo-Hatton passenger bus that plunged into Kelani River in the Aliwatta area of Yatiyantota in the evening of February 10 killing four persons and injuring 53 was alleged to have run the trip with broken spring leaves, according to ASP ABH Bandusena who is conducting investigations.

According to police investigations, the four wheels of the ill-fated bus were found dislodged and the bus has been put on road in spite of the spring leaves being dangling.

The police has taken action to refer the bus to the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles for further investigations.

Additional buses in East

A fleet of additional buses will be mobilised by the new Eastern Bus Company, Minister of Highways and Eastern Transport A. L. M. Athaullah told the press yesterday.

The new services which will be part of the 100 days programme began with the launch of a new bus route in Alenkulama the new route, services villages from Alenkulama through Addailachchenai, Oluvil and Sinha Palamunai.

The Alenkulama - Addailachchenai Road has been repaired to accommodate the new service.

The Minister said steps had been taken to widen the Kalmunai - Akkaraipattu Road to bring transportation in this key paddy growing area up to standard.

Heavy rain in Ampara

Torrential rain pouring in the Ampara district since last week has disturbed and caused severe damage to the paddy crops.

Paddy crops lying in the paddy fields after being harvested are badly affected.

Crops to be harvested are under water and harvesting works are in question as a result.

In Akkaraipattu area alone 25,000 acres of paddy land were brought under cultivation this season. Paddy cultivators are very much concerned about the present unexpected rain.
