Stop corrupting youth, say Maha Nayakes

Most Ven.Udugama Sri Buddharakkhita Maha Nayake Thera of the Asgiriya Chapter of the Siyam Maha Nikaya, Most Ven.Madihe Pannasiha Maha Nayake Thera of the Amarapura Nikaya and Most Ven.Weweldeniye Medhalankara Maha Nayake Thera of the Sri Lanka Ramanna Nikaya have requested President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga to take urgent steps to stop the degradation of Sri Lankan culture, which has helped Sri Lankans to maintain mental and spiritual balance befitting a human society for 2500 years.

Scrupulous entrepreneurs and the media patronised by them are conspiring to destroy this precious culture, the venerable prelates said in a letter to the President. It is clear that these forces are attempting to poison the minds of our youth, who constitute the country's future, the letter said.

As an example of this attempt to prevent the youth, especially school children, the venerable prelates contemptuously noted the attempt to get the youth especially schoolchildren to celebrate February 14 as a Day of Lovers. This seriously affects school discipline, and school principals are making complaints about it, the venerable prelates added.

The prelates called upon the President and the Government to intervene to stop this degradation of national culture by corrupting the minds of youth.
