Data bank on unemployed youth

by Uditha Kumarasinghe

A data bank on unemployed youth including those attached to Youth Clubs throughout the country is to be set up by the National Youth Services Council (NYSC) soon.

This follows a directive issued by Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Johnston Fernando under his Ministry's 100 days accelerated Development Program.

The Minister has directed the NYSC to make use of the Data Bank to direct youth towards gainful employment and prevent them leading lives of frustration, a NYSC spokesman told the Daily News yesterday.

Under this program the council will gather educational and other details of youth between the ages of 15 to 29 to be incorporated to the Data Bank.

The collection of data has already begun at Divisional Secretariat level. A personal document will also be prepared for each youth to provide accurate information on them. All such information will be computerised at the NYSC Data Bank,he said.

The spokesman said:" The NYSC, the pioneer institution for youth welfare with a history of over two decades has still not collected any personal information on the country's youth population."

Under this program, information will be gathered on the number of youth who have passed G.C.E.O/L and A/L Examinations and the educational qualifications of each youth who are presently seeking employment. Information will also be collected on youth who have left schools and those who are presently engaged in higher education and all youth attached to countrywide Youth Clubs.

This endeavour would enable the NYSC to collect data on all youth and formulate its future programs in a manner that would best suit the requirements of youth, he said.

Meanwhile initiatives have been taken by the NYSC to restructure the countrywide Youth Clubs coming under its purview. A Youth Club will be established at each Grama Niladari division to increase the membership to 600,000 under the 100 Day program, he said.

Computers will be provided to each district and provincial offices of the NYSC to expedite the data collection, the spokesman added.
