India does not want war with Pakistan but is ready for it: PM

NEW DELHI, Jan 23 (AFP) - Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee said Wednesday that India does not want war with Pakistan but if conflict erupted, the country would face it.

"We do not want war, we do not desire war. But if it happens, we will have to face it with courage and win it," the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported Vajpayee as saying at a National Bravery Award event.

Vajpayee said India had never attacked another nation but if it came under attack, "we will not tolerate it."

"We are worshippers of peace. But if needed, we can also be devotees of revolution," he said.

Tensions between nuclear-armed India and Pakistan have been running high since a December 13 attack on the parliament in New Delhi, which India blames on Pakistan-based militant groups carrying out "cross-border terrorism".

Fourteen people, including the attackers, were killed in the attack.

Both countries have massed some one million troops along their shared borders in a tense military standoff.

Pakistan has said it will crackdown on militant groups, but India has said more action needs to be taken.

Vajpayee reiterated in a meeting with a special emissary of Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi that there would be no grounds for the building of confidence in Pakistan until there was an end to "cross-border terrorism."

The special envoy, Salim ben Amer, conveyed Libyan government's strong condemnation of the December 13 attack and handed Vajpayee a letter from Kadhafi.
