Joint ceasefire in place by February 24

The government is hopeful that a fully structured joint ceasefire with the LTTE would be in place before February 24, the date on which extended unilateral ceasefire declared by the LTTE expires, Cabinet spokesman Minister, Professor G.L. Peiris said yesterday.

Media liberalisation in the offing

A host of legislative enactments are in the pipeline aimed at liberalising the media and providing enhanced media freedom.Cabinet spokesman Prof. G. L. Peiris told the media yesterday that archaic provisions of the penal code which currently bound mediamen to the criminal defamation law would be excised.
