Winning trophies has become a habit for Kandy SC, says Malik

By our Kandy Sports correspondent

"Kandy Sports Club has performed consistently and has won a number of rugby titles over the years which is a good record for an outstation club playing top level rugby. They have won the Clifford Cup title nine times during the past ten years and they should endeavour to win the League title in similar fashion in the future" said Malik Samarawickrema, who is a Trustee of the Club and was recently appointed Chairman of the ruling United National Party.

He was addressing the Annual General Meeting of the 128 year old Kandy Sports Club held at the Nittawela Club premises last Sunday.

Malik Samarawickrema said that winning trophies has become a habit for Kandy Sports Club since 1992 and they are so popular and they are like Manchester United in soccer. The club has done well in the year under review and the finances has been managed will which has resulted in settling the debts. The club should maintain this trend and perform even better in the future. He thanked the Club officials for a job well done and they should keep it up.

Dr. Sarath Kapuwatte, who was re-elected President for the third successive year and who has served as President for eight years, since 1991 said that the Club has done well in 2001 by winning both the Caltex Rugby League tournament and the Caltex Clifford Cup rugby tournaments and he thanked Iswan Omar for conducting the Singer Sri Lankan International Rugby Sevens in which sixteen countries participated which was by far, the biggest rugby tournament held in the continent. He also expressed his appreciation of the good work done by the Club officials through dedication, team work which has once again made them the top performers in the local rugby scene. The club had also shown tremendous progress in every field and he was confident that the new Committee will perform even better as they are men with experience and their expertise will be an asset to the Club in all its endeavours.

The Club also hosted those present to a fellowship lunch.
