Southern Eliyakanda Hill Climb on January 26

All arrangements have been made to hold the famous Southern Eliyakanda Hill Climb tomorrow (26th) at Browns Hill, Matara. This meet is organised by the Southern Motor Sports Club (SMSC) for the fourth consecutive year. The very day this Hill Climb was held last year, the former President of the Southern Motor Sports Club, late Preethi Palliyaguru fell ill and passed away after two days. As a mark of respect for the yeoman service rendered by him to the club the organisers have decided to call this year's event as "Preethi Palliyaguru Memorial Southern Eliyakanda Hill Climb 2001/2002.

The meet will be conducted according to International Competition rules as far as the resources available in Sri Lanka permit to do so. It starts from the main gate of the resident of District Secretary at Browns Hill, Matara and terminates at latter premises. The Browns Hill stands like a giant amidst the flat terrain of Matara, adding to the scenic beauty of the city. It is one of the most beautiful locations in the Matara city, providing a panoramic view of the Matara coast. The route consists of a narrow path of exciting bands and climbs providing the competitors with an experience that they are unlikely to forget.

The duration of the meet will be approximately seven hours starting at 8.00 a.m. and terminating around 3.00 p.m. There will be 17 events, including both motor cycles and motor cars to encourage women drivers, a 'ladies event' has also been included. The prize distribution will take place at the Pearl Cliff Hotel at the same venue (located quite close to the race track). There were about 100 entries at the previous meet, including those of the well known motor sportsmen in the country. Almost all super drivers of the country have taken part in this meet which has been acknowledged by them as one of the best and most challenging Hill Climbs of Sri Lanka. Increasingly large numbers of spectators are attending this event adding to its glamour.

This meet, which was earlier scheduled to be held on the 13th of January has been postponed to 26th January 2002, due to unavoidable circumstances.
