SriLankan IT network expands to Chennai

SriLankan Airlines added Chennai in India as the second overseas station to be connected to its rapidly growing Information Technology (IT) Overseas Network. The airline's Dubai office is already connected and plans are under way to add several other overseas offices to the IT Network, an airline press release said.

All Sri Lankan Airlines staff at the Chennai city office are now connected to the Sri Lankan IT Network and have access to the software systems that are available to the staff at the head office in Colombo. This enables the overseas offices which have been connected, to virtually be in Colombo through standardized personal computers.

The migration has enabled staff in these stations to communicate and work efficiently using IT systems that are provided by Sri Lankan IT. All staff in the Chennai city office now have access to the corporate Email system, latest version of MS Office packages and all operational applications.

They will also have access to the company intranet, where they can access up to-date information about the airline. If they need any standard applications, this can now be done remotely from Colombo. The IT system maintenance and upgrades are also centrally managed from Colombo.

Migration of the Chennai city office has increased the efficiency of the staff's day to day work, made their communication with Colombo much faster and has made the adminstration of IT systems and hardware much easier. Besides, the Chennai city office environment is now ready to benefit from the corporate application currently being developed for the airline's head office.

With the migration of the Chennai city office to the SriLankan IT Network, users are now effectively supported from the SriLankan IT Service Desk and central resources. A recovery plan too is in place.

The Cheanni site migration was a successful team effort of several departments namely Network Development, Network Operations, Human Resource Development Centre and End User Computing (EUC). The migration of the Chenni city office took six days.

Twenty-eight staff, which included staff from our GSA, Translanka, stationed in Chennai, were trained on the new PC environment, and were given on-the-job assistance to make them familiar with the new product. This product will be subsequently extended to the airport and cargo offices in Chennai under the second phase of the project.

With the support of Head of Commercial G.T. Jeyaseelan and Head of Information Technology Nigel O'Shea, a number of business cases are now in place to connect more overseas sites to the SriLankan Network soon, which would facilitate their staff to work more efficiently using IT systems and make the SriLankan Airlines IT network one of the largest and up-to-date networks in the industry, the release said.
