Army deserter fined Rs. 10,000 A young army deserter was fined Rs. 10,000 by the Kandy Magistrate, C. V. Rajapakse when he pleaded guilty in a ganja case on Tuesday. Sergeant A. M. Jayawardene of the Katugastota police produced the deserter, R. M. G. Saman Deepaloka of Marawanagoda, Werellagama and charged him with possessing 1000 mgs. of ganga on January 14. He told court that inquiries have revealed that the accused is an army deserter and moved that he be handed over to the Military Police of the Sri Lanka Army. Counsel for the accused informed court that the accused was prepared to pay Rs. 5000 of the fine and moved that he be allowed to pay the balance Rs. 5000 within a month. The Magistrate allowed the application and ordered the fiscal authorities to handover the accused to the Military Police attached to 2V Sinha Regiment Headquarters after he pays the first instalment (Rs. 5000) of the fine. He also directed the accused to appear with the second instalment (Rs. 5000) of the fine in court on February 19. |
