Govt. MPs tackle soaring prices The Government Parliamentary Group which met at the Parliamentary Complex yesterday discussed at length the soaring prices of essential commodities and identified the failure to maintain adequate buffer stocks and the import of commodities without proper planning as the main cause of unrest among local producers and the consumers. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe pointed out that a special Committee headed by K. H. J. Wijedasa will take decisions relating to the import of food and essential commodities and strive to maintain a fair level of prices safeguarding the interests of both the producer and the consumer. This Committee is expected to report on the situation to the Cabinet every fortnight. The Prime Minister expressed hopes to stabilise reasonable prices in this manner by importing additional stocks within the next two months. The Prime Minister while alerting the members on the counter activities of opposition parties urged United National Front members to formulate programmes at party level to answer such measures by enlisting the cooperation of the free media, but not the State media or the State machinery. |
