by Florence Wickramage The government hospital at Madhu will be upgraded to a fully fleged hospital to cater to the needs of the people of Vanni. A request has been made to the Asian Development Bank for financial assistance to carry on the work, Minister of Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Refugees Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena told the Daily News. The Minister said that the people of Vanni had to undergo severe hardships due to lack of proper medical services. They had to travel miles and miles at all times of the day to reach the only available hospital at Vanni where there is a limited number of Medical personnel available to man all departments. The Madhu Hospital will be equipped with an updated labour room, a surgical unit, an outpatients department etc. Upgrading medical facilities will be one major aspect of the humanitarian work the Ministry has undertaken to ensure that the basic needs of the people of the Vanni are provided to them. There are over 500,000 refugees in the Vanni alone, the Minister said. |
