The Government has extended the period of cessation of hostilities by another one month in response to the LTTE's announcement on Sunday. Prime Minister, Rail Wickremesinghe on Sunday has informed the Norwegian Foreign Ministry that the Sri Lankan government was extending the unilateral announcement of cessation of hostilities up to February 24, a press release of the Royal Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Norway said yesterday. The extension is in order to provide Norway time to facilitate, a mutually agreed cease-fire between the Government of Sri Lanka and the LTTE, the Prime Minister has stated in his message to the Norwegian Foreign Ministry. The LTTE announced on Sunday that it had extended its unilateral announcement of cessation of hostilities which was due to lapse on Thursday (24) night, by another month. The truce commenced on Christmas eve. "This is a step forward in reaching a mutually agreed cease-fire," Enterprise Development, Industrial Policy and Investment Promotion and Constitutional Affairs Minister Prof. G. L. Peiris told the Daily News. "We are now in the process of incorporating terms and conditions agreeable to both sides to arrive at a common agreement in respect of a permanent cease-fire," said Prof. Peiris. |
