Flash flood kills 18, three others missing in Sumatra JAKARTA, Jan 13 (AFP) - Eighteen people were killed and three others were missing after a flash flood swept a hamlet on the slope of the Dempo mountain in Indonesia's South Sumatra province, a search and rescue officer said Sunday. "Rains caused a flash flood to descend the mountain through the small Pengentaan River on Thursday and 18 people were found dead while searches are still ongoing to locate another three people who went missing," said R. Bambang from the South Sumatra provincial Search and Rescue office. He said the flood swept the Talang Sengkuat hamlet passed by the river on its way down from the Dempo mountain. Bambang said a six-man team from the provincial search and rescue office, with the help of the local police and inhabitants, were still looking for the three missing people and clearing the course of the river to prevent further floods. |
