Minister Azwer's cousin dies in train accident

P. Samsudeen (66) a cousin of Minister of Parliamentary Affairs A. H. M. Azwer and who was travelling in the Colombo bound train from Kandy and who was seriously injured following the train mishap at Rambukkana yesterday morning had succumbed to his injuries after he was transferred to the Colombo National hospital.

Minister A. H. M. Azwer who heard of the sudden demise of his cousin had immediately gone to the scene of the tragedy along with UNP General Secretary Senarath Kapukotuwa.

P. Samsudeen who was a retired public servant was a resident of Aruppola Kandy and had three children working in Dubai, Bahrain and the UK.

No power cuts today

There will be no power cuts today (January 14) in view of the Thai Pongal festival, the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) spokesman said.

The CEB despite the unstable power situation has taken this decision on the request of Power and Energy Minister Karu Jayasuriya considering the importance of the Thai Pongal festival.

BBC broadcasts recommence

BBC Sinhala and Tamil broadcasts will recommence on SLBC from tomorrow (January 15).

This follows the recent discussion between Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Mass Communication Minister Imithiyaz Bakeer Markar and BBC Sinhala Editor Priyath Liyanage, a BBC press relese said.

Elizabeth Wright, Head of Region, Asia and the Pacitfc at BBC World Service expressed her delight that programming was now available again on local frequencies. "Both services provide listeners with a broad range of programming including invaluable national and international news through the BBC's unrivalled network of correspondents worldwide." Listeners can turn into each broadcast for half an hour every day to hear the latest news, current affairs and analysis. In addition there is a daily feature looking at issues on different topics such as science, art and culture. English language teaching programming is also available. The BBC Sinhala transmission can be heard at 9.15pm, local time, followed by the Tamil transmission at 9.45pm, on the following FM frequencies 98.3, 99.6, 107.6, and 102. BBC programming in English is also available on SLBC. This complements transmissions in all three languages on short wave throughout the region.

Remanded on sex abuse charge

A man of 60 has been remanded by the Mt. Lavinia Magistrate on a charge of alleged sex abuse committed on a 9 year old girl, according to Mt. Lavinia police.

At the time of the incident, the girl concerned was residing with an aunt of hers as her mother was employed abroad, and her father is said to have abandoned her.

Mt. Lavinia Police initiated investigations on a complaint made by the aunt of the victim girl.

Bridges to be constructed

The Akuressa Pradeshiya Sabha has planned to build a new bridge over Nilwala Ganga between Paraduwa Watta and Athuraliya at a cost of Rs. 3 lakhs for the benefit of villagers in Athuraliya and adjacent areas.

In addition it has also planned to construct another bridge at Koratuwa Watta in Bangama, Akuressa at a cost of Rs. 252,000 by the Pradeshiya Sabha.

Matara - N' Eliya new bus service

Matara Depot of the Ruhunu Bus Company started a new bus service from Matara to Nuwara Eliya recently.

It will start from the Matara public bus stand at 8.30 a.m. and operate via Tangalle and Ella to reach Nuwara Eliya by 5 p.m. on the same day. On the following day it would start at 8.30 a.m. from the Nuwara Eliya public stand, operate on the same route and reach Matara public bus stand by 5 p.m. on the same day.
