The suspects are Upul Bandara, Kusumsiri Hapugoda, P. G. Samarakoon, U. G. Dixon Bandara, J. G. Jayashantha and H. G. U. N. Wickremasinghe of Wattapola and Pilimatalawa. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th suspects, who are on Rs. 200,000 personal bail each, appeared in court. According to police, the suspects had gone in search of treasure and broken a 27 foot long reclining Buddha statue at the Gallangolla Rajamaha Viharaya, Kadugannawa on July 7. When the case was called, counsel for the 1st, 5th and 6th suspects informed court that 2nd, 3rd and 4th suspects had been released on bail and moved that 1st, 5th and 6th suspects be released on bail. Sergeant W. A. Ananda of the Divisional Crime Detective Bureau (DCDB) Kandy submitted a further report and said that the 1st, 5th and 6th suspects are kept in remand as there is strong evidence against them.
