by Jaffna special correspondent The price of consumer goods is shooting up day by day in Jaffna and as a result the people are forced to buy the essential foodstuffs at a very exorbitant price. Here is the price per kilogram of some of the essential food stuffs in Jaffna. Raw rice Rs. 45, Sugar Rs. 48 to 50, Brown sugar Rs. 50, Green gram Rs. 85, Toor dhal Rs. 60, Red chillies Rs. 210 to 215, Sunlight Rs. 19 per cake, Lakspray Rs. 130 to 135, Lactogen Rs. 168, Anchor Rs. 135 to 140, Coconut oil Rs. 115 per litre, Kerosene oil Rs. 60 per litre. The consumers complain that the Jaffna traders have jacked up the price to reap the maximum profit and there is none to question them for their arbitrary fixing of prices. They also complain that the newly elected representatives of Parliament are in Colombo and are unconcerned about the severe hardships endured by the people owing to the spiralling of prices.
