A series of projects to solve the water problem of the Kurunegala District are in the offing under the new Government's 100 day accelerated programme to usher in peace and prosperity. A preliminary discussion for this purpose was held recently at Sakura Preschool Centre, Welangollawatte, Kurunegala, under the patronage of Irrigation and Water Management Minister Gamini Jayawickrema Perera who is responsible for proposing this series of projects. The Creation of a micro powerhouse by amalgamating a number of small water projects, maximization of water management in approximately 6000 agricultural wells in the District, reservation of 70 to 80 per cent of rain water that flows into the sea unutilized, construction of an irrigational network covering 600 hectares of land, development of 2400 hectares of paddy land in the left bank of Deduru-oya and construction of a canal connecting Deduru-oya to Inginimitiya Reservoir in order to supply drinking water to the two towns of Puttalam and Kurunegala are among the projects under this program. The feasibility of diverting Rajangana Canal water to Galgamuwa and restoration of about 23 tanks and 6000 anicuts in the Kurunegala District were also discussed. Kurunegala District Secretary T. Ranasinghe and a large number of heads of Government Departments and various organizations took part in the discussion. |
