President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, last Friday(11) called on the Maha Nayaka Theras of the Malwatte and Asgiriya Chapters at Kandy to receive their blessings and to discuss with them some of the problems confronting the country.

Considering it as one of her top official priorities for the New Year, the President met Ven. Udugama Buddharakkhitha Mahanayaka Thera, the Chief Incumbent and Ven. Galagama Aththadassi Anunayake Thera of the Siyam Mahanikaya of the Asgiriya Chapter, at the Asgiriya Viharaya, and having paid her obeisance, explained to the Venerable Theras her stance on the current major issues in the country.

The President also called on the Ven. Rambukwelle Vipassi Mahanayaka Thera, the Chief Incumbent of the Siyam Mahanikaya of the Malwatu Chapter who is under medication at the Kandy Hospital and paid homage to the Nayaka Thera.

At these meetings the President explained to the Ven. Mahanayaka Theras her relentless dedication, untiring efforts and her resolve to re-establish lasting peace in the country and pledged her unstinted cooperation to the present Government to achieve this end. She also expressed her grave concern about the ongoing post election violence,a phenomenon which she did not allow to exist after 1994.

The Venerable Nayaka Theras while noting the importance of measures to eradicate such violence, blessed the President with courage and strength to face the difficulties and challenges confronting her in order to serve the people of Sri Lanka much further.
