Equipment lying idle at Govt. film unit by Ramyatilleke Talpita Mass Communication Minister Imthiasz Bakeer Markar yesterday directed the Director of Information to submit a detailed report on the sophisticated film equipment valued at Rs. 90 million imported from France lying idle at the Government film unit. The minister who saw this equipment packed inside a temporary shed during an inspection tour of the Information Department Complex said that report should detail the purpose behind the import of this equipment and the objectives for which they were intended. These valuable equipment imported by the Information Department nearly a year ago were subsequently requisitioned by the State Film Corporation and transported to its studio at Dalugama, Kelaniya. Following objections by the French Embassy the equipment were returned to the government film unit for which it was originally intended. During the Minister's inspection tour it was revealed that nearly Rs. 1 million had been spent for transporting the equipment from Narahenpita to Kelaniya and back. The sound studio of the government film unit still remained sealed and valuable documentary films produced by the film unit since independence have been removed by the State Film Corporation. Minister Imthiasz Bakeer Markar said he would re-open the Government Film Unit soon after studying the information director's report. |
