Enlist corporation of all to develop backward schools by Chilaw group Correspondent 'I do not wish you to get involved in any violence. I dont want you to burn down houses. What I want you to do is to get the support and co-operation of friends, benefactors and philanthropists in the area to develop backward schools in the periphery,' said Puttalam District M.P. Neomal Perera last Monday. The M.P. addressing as the chief guest a public meeting at the grounds of Mount Carmel Balika Girls College Chilaw. Earlier in the day, the M.P. opened a large community hall which was he furbished at a cost of six lakhs of rupees. Among others present on the occasion were North Western Provincial Council member Ayub Kharn, Rev Fr. Nicholas Lowe, Chilaw Diocesan Director of Education, Chilaw Director of Education Reginald Perera and a number of Government officials. Rev. Sister Anne Muriel, A.C. Principal of the school welcomed the distinguished guests. M.P. Neomal Perera said that normally he worked for 18 hours a day. If anybody wants development, he should be willing to work as I do, the M.P. said. I do not want to put my finger into the working of any school. But if I do receive any genuine complaint, I shall certainly inquire into the matter and just punishment will be meted out irrespective of party affiliations. The Rs. 5 lakhs that I have given to this school is not my money; it is your money. You should be thankful to your Sister principal who has taken great pains to get this money. North Western Provincial Council member Ayub Khan said that he was also an old pupil of the school. This was the first public function of the Member of parliament. Mr. Khan said that he was glad to donate one and a half lakhs of rupees for a laboratory. He advised the pupils to give due respect to their parents. A striking feature in the days celebrations was the taking of oalths of members of the school parliament. |
