Empower the village first, then urban areas by Kurunegala North Group Correspondent Eighty per cent of Sri Lankans are living below the poverty line is no secret. They are living in object poverty. Considered separately from the urban economy, the rural economy provides the bulk of national produce for consumption from agricultural produce to others. It is the rural areas that are confronted with all the social perils such as poverty, ignorance, lack of earning opportunities, inadequacy of educational facilities and the absence of social infrastructure such as health, said Gamini Jayawickrama Perera the Minister of Irrigation and Water Management addressing a meeting that followed his inspection visit to Sakura pre school Kurunegala recently. With the Minister were S.B. Navinne Chief Minister NWPC, Rohitha Bogallagama Minister of Industries, Deputy Minister of Environment and Natural Resources Indika Bandaranayake and Kurunegala District MPs, Anura Gopallawa and Soma Kumari Thennekoon. Minister Jayawickrama Perera also said that it is the prime objective of the United National Front government to empower the village first and then urban areas. It is with this noble ideals in mind that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has taken to the objective of progressing the country's economy. The Minister of Irrigation pledged to serve the people of Wayamba irrespective of political differences and said that the United National Front Government will soon take steps to establish another free trade zone in Kurunegala and provide the youth in the area with the necessary training to reap the fruits of the opportunities. The Chief Minister N.W.P.C. S.B. Nawinne said that he will render his fullest support and co-operation to the new Minister without any political differences to solve the problems confronting to the people of Wayamba.
