Minister Fernando states that South Africa and particularly Nelson Mandela has always been very close to his heart. His support and dedication towards South Africa and Nelson Mandela goes back to his youth. Minister Fernando was the President of the Oxford University Afro-Asian Society in the early sixties and at Oxford, when Nelson Mandela was arrested, he walked into the South African embassy in protest. South African Cricket giant Dr Ali Bacher has called him a "top quality cricket administrator" and has admired Minister Fernando for the great support extended by him for South African Cricket. In recognition of his unique role in South Africa's re-entry to the International Cricket arena, he was a guest of the South Africa Cricket Board on a 3 week tour of South Africa in 1993. |
