Mega National Employment policy to be introduced

by Ananda Kannangara

A mega National Employment Policy (NEP) to provide thousands of local and foreign job opportunities for Sri Lankan workers will be introduced by Employment and Labour Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe within the next few weeks.

The program which is the brainchild of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will be drawn up within the Government's 100 day development program with the assistance of Ernst and Young, the well-known Chartered Accountants.

"As you all know the country's economy has collapsed to zero due to non implementation of viable economic programs by the previous regime. Therefore to create a better employment environment to strengthen our economy, we have focused the attention towards some other areas too", Minister Samarasinghe said at a press briefing in Colombo yesterday,

Safety and health measures for workers, a housing construction program known as " Kamkaru Nivasa " for low income groups especially for estate workers, a special worker insurance scheme for Sri Lankans employed in Sri Lanka and foreign countries, bank loan facilities for people to start self employment projects are some of the key areas to be covered under this scheme.

Minister Samarasinghe said that a novel job providing program for the youth titled " Shrama Abimana -2002 " will also be launched in every district commencing from Kalutara District with the participation of local industrialists and foreign investors before the end of next month.

"We have decided to hold a meeting on January 11 with the officials of Ernst and Young and representatives of Government institutions, trade unions and employers to discuss the National Employment Policy further".
