Good times ahead for tourist industry

Tourism which suffered a major setback in the recent past has shown signs of picking up after the new government assumed office with Tourist Agencies trying to bring in more visitors from non traditional countries in the East like Russia and China.

A group of more than 600 Russian tourists arrived here last week as a result of this tourist promotion drive in the non-traditional market, said the Ministry of Tourism in a press release issued yesterday.

The Ministry has now decided to support this tourist promotion drive in countries in the Eastern region specially Russia and China under its development program to coincide with the Government's 100 days program.

Tourism Minister Gamini Lokuge will meet Russian Ambassador Michail A. Knorovsky at the Russian Embassy today to drew up a program to promote more Russian tourists to Sri Lanka. Delegates of several Russian Travel Agencies and representatives of the Sri Lanka-Russia Friendship Association are also due to attend this meeting.
