Gantry cranes repaired

The two gantry cranes at the Jaye Container Terminal of the Colombo Port, damaged after collision with a German vessel have been repaired, a Ports Ministry spokesman said.

Engineers of the SLPA who resumed repairs soon after the accident on Sunday evening, were able to complete work by around 4.00 am yesterday and operations started from 9.30 am.

The German Vessel, MV Tiger Stream from Cochin had unloaded 317 containers at the south extension of the JCT_4 and was heading towards Unity Pier to load another 175 containers for transshipment to Cochin when the collision occurred. The damage to the cranes is estimated at around Rs. 20 million.

The operations of JCT-4 were brought to a standstill. JCT-4 handles over 5000 containers a day came to a complete standstill with the damage to these two gantry cranes.

The Ports Development, Shipping, Eastern Development and Muslim Religious Affairs Minister Rauf Hakeem commended the Ports Authority and the staff for the speed which with the damaged cranes were restored.

Meanwhile, a statement of the captain has been recorded by the SLPA. The Tiger Stream will be anchored at the Colombo Port until the inquiry is over and damages will be charged from the shipping line, the spokesman said.
