FFSL gives financial assistance to 26 clubs

Nine clubs participating in the Premier League Championships 2001 and seventeen clubs in the Division One Tournament received financial assistance from the Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) at a simple ceremony held at the Football House, Reid Avenue on Thursday.

Cash awards of Rs. 100,000 each were presented to Cooray SC, Java Lane SC, Jupiters SC, Negombo Youth SC, Old Bens SC, Pettah United SC, Renown SC, Ratnam SC and Victory SC - and the clubs playing in the Premier League Championships. Meanwhile Division One clubs received Rs. 25,000 each are - Chilaw Youth SC, Hyline SC, Kandy York SC, Manchester SC, Maya SC, Marians SC, New Star SC, New Youngs SC, Pelicans SC, Red Diamond SC, Red Suns SC, Super Beach SC, Sapphire SC, Thotawatte SC, Tri Star SC, York SC and Youngsters SC.

Manilal Fernando, the Chairman Competition Committee of FFSL at a press conference held yesterday said that they are happy to distribute cash awards to participating clubs in both tournaments. This will be the start and they will continue to offer more financial assistance to the soccer playing clubs.

Both tournaments are run smoothly, and Fernando said that due to non-availability of grounds, the clubs and the FFSL are facing a major problem. He appealed to the authorities concerned that soccer playing fields should be found and hoped that the Colombo Municipal Council will take back the Municipal Sports Club Grounds and give the FFSL the Reid Avenue Grounds for football.

Fernando further said that Premil SC, Wanathamulla Youth SC and Maligawatte Youth SC have been suspended for violating rules of the championships currently on. The Competition Committee along with the Disciplinary Committee of the FFSL have taken stern action against these three clubs.

Yesterday three coaches who successfully followed the international coaching course were presented with their certificates - they are Rohitha Fernando (Wennappuwa), Sumith Walpola (Colombo) and Rumy Packerally (Negombo) DIG, Gamini Randeni, the President of the Football Federation of Sri Lanka gave away these certificates.

Premier League Championships

Blue Star SC, Kalutara has taken the top spot in the championships with 16 points, winning 5 games, drawing one and losing the other. Meanwhile the defending champions Saunders SC also with 16 points is in second place with 5 wins and a draw. Last year's runners-up Negombo Youth SC took the third place with 15 points, 4 wins, 3 draws.

The other teams performances are Jupiters SC 13 points, Air Force SC 13 points, Renown SC 11 points, Cooray SC 9 points, Ratnam SC 8 points, Old Bens SC 8 points, Wanathamulla Youth SC 7 points, Java Lane SC 6 points, Navy SC 6 points, Victory SC 5 points, Pettah United SC 3 points and Army SC 3 points.
