US mounts spy mission in Somalia: British press LONDON, Dec 11 (AFP) - US army officers have secretly entered Somalia in the first indication of President George W. Bush's determination to extend the war against terrorism, a British daily said Tuesday. Five military personnel reached the heart of the country and met a rebel movement in Baidoa, 150 miles (240 kilometres) west of the capital Mogadishu, in a search for suspected terrorist camps, the Daily Telegraph said. The Americans had talks with the leaders of the Rahanwein Resistance Army (RRA) and visited an airport and several military barracks, the paper said quoting an RRA official. Since the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington, the US has taken several steps against Somali individuals and organisations. An Islamic fundamentalist organisation based in Somalia, Al-Ittihad, is on a US list of organisations with links to international terrorism. |
