Arsonists turn robbers

Five shops and three houses at Mawaramandiya in Sapugaskanda police division were set on fire by an unidentified gang on Sunday night around Sapugaskanda police said.

It is reported that a gang of twelve armed with pistols and petrol bombs had come in a van without a number plate surrounded the area and hurled petrol bombs at the shops and three nearby houses. In the aftermath, they have extorted Rs. 18,000 at gunpoint from three girls who were returning home after work at the Biyagama FTZ.

No arrests have been made so far. Sapugaskanda police are conducting investigations.

Smart work by Kandy Police

An attempt by about 500 persons to forcibly occupy two divisions of the Hantane Group in Kandy was foiled by the Kandy Police on a complaint made by the Estate officials.

On December 9th (Sunday) about 500 persons had allocated about 100 acres of land in the Udawela and Uragala Divisions of the Hantane Group for themselves which is about four miles from Kandy. They had also allocated prime land facing the Dumbara Valley from where the Victoria Reservoir could be seen. This land has mostly timber forest and a little tea.

The Manager of the Hantane Group, Ronnie Gunaratne on hearing of this forcible encroachment complained to the Kandy police. A police party headed by Head Quarters Inspector M. Mahendra took prompt action to evict the encroachers and warned them not to come again as legal action will be instituted against them.

A similar land grab took place at Attanagalla before the General Elections.

Rs. 44 lakhs to uplift poor in Kalutara

Rs. 44 lakhs have been spent under Samurdhi program to uplift the living standard of the low income group of families in Kalutara district said Mrs. D. Haputhanthri Deputy Commissioner of Samurdhi Development in Kalutara.

The money has been allocated to 55 Samurdhi division of Kalutara district for development projects.

Rs. 80,000 have been spent for each Samurdhi division in Kalutara district.

Bachelor knocked down by bus

A bachelor H. Sugathadasa (32) of Galahitiyawa was knocked down by a private bus at Biyagama on Kaduwela-Gampaha Road last Tuesday morning. He died on the spot.

This was revealed at the inquest held on his death by the Inquirer into Sudden Deaths, Colombo City Coroner Edward Ahangama.

Dr. Rahul Hak, AJMO Colombo National Hospital held the autopsy.

A verdict of accidental death was returend.

Biyagama Police are investigating.
