Kandy killings: Appeal for impartial probe Lawyers appearing for Abdul Azeez Mohamed and Thawfeek Mohamed Shifas who were gunned down by unknown gunmen on December 5 with eight other people in Udathalawinna appealed to the Magistrate's Court yesterday to order the Police to produce the suspects in the killing immediately. Claiming that Kandy DIG Mahinda Balasuriya had not taken any action to prevent General Anuruddha Ratwatte and his son Lohan Ratwatte from terrorising the people in the Kandy District, the complainants appealed to the Court to prevent DIG Balasuriya from interfering in the investigation. They accused DIG Balasuriya of trying to release the two vehicles taken into custody after the massacre. The complainants appealed to the Court to order the IGP to nominate a DIG in consultation with the lawyers representing the deceased and the injured to carry out an impartial investigation. Claiming that attempts have been made to suppress vital clues of the massacre, the complainants appealed to the Court to order the Examiner of Fingerprints and the Government Analyst to take over the vehicles to examine the fingerprints. The complainants further appealed to order all citizens and police officers who possessed any information on the killings to come forward and assist the Court to identify the suspects. |
