An evening of classical Bharatanatyam recital by Ms Suriyakala Chandrika Jeevananthan and her pupils will be held on Friday, December 14, 2001 at 6.30 p.m. at the Indian Cultural Centre, 133, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo. Suriyakala was born in Sri Lanka and she learnt Bharathanatyam from her childhood under the guidance of Smt. Vasanthakumari Suriyakumaran at the Kandy Bharathasheshtra Natyalayam. In 1990 she left for India on a cultural scholarship awarded by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations and joined Shriram Bharathiya Kala Kendra (College of Performing Arts) in New Delhi, under the guidance of the renowned guru Shri Justin McCarthy. She went through five years of disciplined and rigorous training in Bharathanatyam and obtained her post diploma in performing arts. Apart from Bharathanatyam she also learnt carnatic music (under Smt Prabha Ramaswamy), Indian folk dances, costume and jewellery designing. She also learned Indian languages including Hindi and Sanskrit. She has done a research on Indian Art and Culture at the National Museum, New Delhi. She taught Bharathanatyam at Shriram Bharathiya Kala Kendra, New Delhi in the capacity of an Assistant Teacher for a period of three years. She has given many solo performances throughout India organised by various cultural organisations and done her Arangetram in 1993 at Triveni Kala Sangam New Delhi. She had appeared in the Doordharshan national television in India and Sri Lankan national television. At present she is a member of the staff of St. Bridget's Convent and Saiva Mangaiyar Kazhagam (Music and Dance School) in Colombo. The recital is open to the public. |
