Indran Amirthanayagam, Public Affairs Officer, American Consulate General, Chennai, India, will deliver a lecture on "The Morning: After September 11", at the SLFI lecture room 3 on December 18 at 5 p.m. Born in Colombo, Ceylon, 1960, Amirthanayagam emigrated to the United States in 1975. He joined the United States Foreign Service in 1993 and has served in Buenos Aires, Brussels, Abidjan and Mexico City. He is currently the Public Affairs Officer in the American Consulate General in Chennai. Amithanayagam has also established himself as a noted poet and translator both in English and Spanish. His poetry collections include "El infierno de los pajaros", which was published in Mexico City this year, and "The Elephants of Reckoning", which won the 1994 Paterson poetry prize in the United States. He has launched a new volume of poetry, Ceylon RIP, just this week. His translations of the Mexican poet Manual Ulacia will be published in 2002 in the United States. Amirthanayagam comes from a family of diplomats, his father having served as Deputy High Commissioner for Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) while his elder brother is also a member of the United States Foreign Service. Amirthanayagam holds a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University and a bachelor's degree in English literature from Haverford College. The lecture is organised by the Public Affairs section of the US Embassy, Colombo. |
