by Trincomalee correspondent The Integrated Food Security Program (IFSP) Trincomalee will with the participation of the Department of Agrarian Services Trincomalee implemented a minor tank renovation program in the Trincomalee district. Under this program 75 minor tanks will be renovated in the divisions of Mutur, Ichilampattai, Kuchchaveli, Gomarankandawala, Morawewa and Padavisripura. Once these tanks are renovated 4,811 acres of land could be brought under paddy cultivation which will benefit 2,359 families. Under this program it is expected to construct 75 sluices, improve about 50 spills. The work will be carried out through farmer's groups and local community based organisations. The cost of the proposed 75 minor tank rehabilitation programme is estimated at Rs. 30m plus Rs. 30m for about 1,500 metric tons of rice under food-for-work activities totalling Rs. 60m. Five engineers and two draughtsmen have been employed by the Integrated Food Security Programme (IFSP)and seconded to the Department of Agrarian Services. They have carried out investigations of the tanks to assess its potential for cultivation. According to IFSP sources several tanks have been selected from the uncleared areas too. Twenty two tanks have been selected from Mutur division, six tanks from Ichilampattai division, seven from Kuchchaveli division, nineteen from Gomarankadawala division, ten from Padavisripura division and eleven from Morawewa division. |
