PA will at as a responsible Opposition

by Ravi Ladduwahetty

The People's Alliance will act as a responsible Opposition and support the UNP Government in affairs that are of vital interest to the nation, former Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake told a news conference at Hotel Galadari yesterday.

The former Premier, flanked by twelve of his former Cabinet colleagues, said:" While we will support he Government from the Opposition, we will also rigidly oppose what ever that is detrimental to the country not only in Parliament but also countrywide."

The Premier, while profusely thanking all the party supporters who voted for the PA, said that in was absolutely disconcerting to note that the PA supporters being harassed and victimised en masse countrywide in a similar manner to the post 1977 era where the law and order situation was at a zero level.

Individuals have been manhandled and houses and property have been damaged on a large scale and this is not democracy. Every one has a right to support a party of his choice and work for it, he charged.

PA General Secretary and former Agriculture Minister D.M. Jayaratne said that political violence should be stopped.

He urged the authorities to take stern action against trouble-makers.

Former Urban Development Minister Mangala Samaraweera said:" There had been incidents where some PA supporters had been attacked. We hope this culture would stop immediately.

He also urged the media to highlight these acts which the same alacrity that the media sought to highlight acts of violence that occurred during the PA regime.

He also said he hoped that the UNP will be able to continue the media freedom that the PA has created after where there were no inhibitions at all, where even the President was criticised. " We didn't inhibit the media or impose sanctions even when the President was criticised," he said.
