The UNP has decided not to go for a re-poll at centres affected by election rigging. Party General Secretary Senarath Kopukatuwa told reporters outside the Election Commissioners office that a re-poll was unnecessary. All parties had agreed to the decision he said after participating at a meeting with the Commissioner of Elections Dayananda Dissanayake attended by representatives of all political parties. He said his party's aim was to begin a new political culture and every step is being taken to prevent any post election violence. However all those responsible for the present murders would be brought to book, he said. PA General Secretary D. M. Jayaratne attributed his party's defeat at the election to the stepped up violence by the UNP on polling day. He said UNP thugs broke into several polling booths and even invaded the Kachcheri where votes were being counted. He said any decision to extend support to the UNP in dealing with national questions would be decided at the top level of the PA. JVP General Secretary Tilwin Silva while accepting the verdict of the people warned of the possibility of Eelamists calling the shots within the new government. He said he was pleased with the performance by his party at the present elections which had increased its voter tally from 6% to 9% following the last elections. |
